As young students and professionals have begun to take interest in our country's political scenario, one nagging question remains in the back of my mind. Are these very idealistic and rebellion prone future pillars of our nation ready to bear the costs of this utopic nation state they are putting all their efforts toward achieving? Do they even comprehend how different the ethical situation they idolize, is from the reality they currently live in.
For, as we have been forewarned by our predecessors, one must refrain from undertaking a task until one has fully comprehended and accepted the responsibility for the results their actions may bear. It is because such warnings were not heeded that the world is in the state it is today. The human mind , despite its consciously imposed shortcomings , is the most powerful tool possible. And it has the ability to rationally foresee the results of its actions. it is the conscious mind, under pressure of conceived basic necessity , emotional brainwash, and lack of confidence in its own ability, that refuses to accept the possibilities the sub-conscious mind reveals to it. A few hundred years ago, despite the lack of scientific development, I refuse to believe, the world did not see the effects of the industrial revolution in the long run.Why look so far back in the past? Even a quarter century ago, if the words of warning of those more enlightened, had been heeded, we would not have had the environmental disasters we have today.
But I deviate from my original Aim only to make the point, heed warnings for they all hold some shred of truth. Will our country be able to bear the costs and the responsibilities that come with a more ethical administration? It is because we did not have the patience to wait that we have our systems of bribes and under the table payments. As a simple example, how many of us would willingly accept failure in multiple driving tests and keep working at it till we get it right ? How many of us would willingly accept a refusal of our application at a college of our choice on the basic pretense that we just did not work hard enough for it or we are just not suited for the course? The Indian ego is too inflated to accept this and their patience levels are too low to follow the straight and narrow. They prefer the crooked and quick, no matter what the cost.
So will an administration without corruption work in our country or shall we soon be corrupted again? Will all the work my peers have put in go in vain just for the lack of patience and an inflated ego ?
As a concluding remark and proof of my argument I narrate an everyday scene:
"Cop: License dikhao.
Driver: License nahi hai sahab
Cop: Gaadi kaise chalata hai. Chalo Thana!"
Driver: Sab chai paani le lo aur chod do humme,"
Cop: Kitna dega ? "
